Lil Wayne, a prominent figure and longtime advocate for New Orleans, has expressed his disappointment following the announcement that Kendrick Lamar will headline the city’s 2025 Super Bowl halftime show. In a heartfelt video, Wayne shared, “That hurt, it hurt a lot. I thought there was nothing better than that spot, on that stage, on that platform. It broke me, but I’m just trying to put myself back together.”
As the 2025 Super Bowl approaches, Wayne has consistently voiced his desire to perform during the halftime event. “I will not lie to you,” he stated previously. “I have not received a call or anything. We’re praying and keeping our fingers crossed. I’m working hard. I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer.” He also mentioned that if he were chosen for the gig, he would not invite any special guests, emphasizing, “I earned that moment.”
Following the announcement of Lamar as the halftime headliner, several notable artists have shown support for Wayne, including New Orleans icons Birdman and Master P. Nicki Minaj expressed her thoughts on social media, seemingly addressing Jay-Z, who oversees Super Bowl entertainment through his company. She stated, “Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego…”
In defending Lamar’s selection, Jay-Z remarked, “Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. His deep love for hip-hop and culture informs his artistic vision.”
The highly anticipated Super Bowl game is scheduled to take place at Caesars Stadium on February 9, 2025.
