In a significant move for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, several prominent political figures, including Aditya Surjewala, Shruti Choudhry, and Savitri Jindal, have filed their nominations on September 12, 2024. Aditya Surjewala, the son of Congress leader Randeep Surjewala, submitted his papers for the Kaithal assembly seat, accompanied by his father.
Savitri Jindal, mother of Kurukshetra MP Naveen Jindal and former Congress member, is now contesting the elections as an independent candidate for the Hisar seat after being overlooked for a ticket by the BJP. She had previously sought to represent the BJP but will now run independently following the party’s decision to renominate sitting MLA Kamal Gupta for the position.
In addition to Jindal, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala filed his nomination from Ellenabad, while BJP minister Mahipal Dhanda and former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Chander Mohan submitted their papers from Panipat Rural and Panchkula seats, respectively.
The elections for the 90 assembly seats in Haryana are scheduled for October 5, with the counting of votes set for October 8. September 12 marked the final day for filing nominations, while the scrutiny of the submitted papers will take place on September 13. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 16.
Among others, Congress nominee Ashok Arora, supported by former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, filed his papers for the Thanesar seat. The BJP is aiming for a third consecutive victory in the elections, facing challenges from a revitalized Congress party, which seeks to leverage the prevailing anti-incumbency sentiment.
Following her nomination, Jindal emphasized her commitment to the development of Hisar, stating, “The people of Hisar are my family, and I am dedicated to living up to their expectations.” With a substantial legacy in the region and a net worth of $29.1 billion, according to recent reports, Savitri Jindal aims to solidify her family’s political influence in Haryana.
