CHIANG RAI: Severe flooding has overwhelmed the economic center of this northernmost province, with water levels reaching waist-deep and continuing to rise due to the overflowing Kok River. Authorities have closed roads and bridges in Muang district, significantly impacting access to crucial locations, including the Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and the provincial hall.
Evacuations started Wednesday night, as residents were forced to leave their ground-floor homes due to strong currents. Jet skis were deployed for rescue operations, assisting those trapped by the rapidly rising floodwaters.
While operations at Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport are ongoing, Vietjet Air and Lion Air have announced the cancellation of all flights today. Affected passengers can change their flight dates without any fees, as several airlines work to accommodate travelers during this crisis.
Airport management has advised travelers to use an alternate entrance near the airport’s meteorological station instead of the main entrance.
Additionally, Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital in Muang district is currently only treating emergency cases as the region grapples with the aftermath of the floods.
Overall, six districts in Chiang Rai are experiencing flooding, impacting over 10,000 households, with three reported fatalities in Mae Fah Luang. Local officials are continuing to monitor and address the situation as it develops.
