Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris for the presidency shortly after Tuesday night’s presidential debate against Donald Trump. In a statement on Instagram, Swift addressed her decision, identifying herself as “Childless Cat Lady” in response to comments made by Trump’s running mate, JD Vance.
In her message, Swift declared, “I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.” She praised Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and emphasized the importance of calm leadership over chaos.
The singer also commended Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, highlighting his strong advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, in vitro fertilization, and women’s rights over the past decades. Swift was motivated to share her voting decision after seeing an AI-generated image falsely claiming her endorsement of Trump. She voiced concerns about the potential dangers of misinformation and expressed the importance of being transparent about her voting intentions.
Swift’s comments come in the wake of a heated debate where key topics such as abortion rights, the economy, and immigration were heavily discussed. She is not new to political endorsements, having supported Joe Biden and Harris in the 2020 election.
In her social media post, Swift also encouraged young voters to register, stating, “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make.” With over 283 million followers on Instagram, her endorsement quickly garnered more than 4.5 million likes, indicating strong initial engagement.
Political analysts note that while Swift’s endorsement aligns with her previous support for Democratic candidates, its impact on the upcoming election remains to be seen, particularly as her fanbase predominantly consists of young women who are already likely to support Harris.
