With the recent addition of Logan Lucky to streaming platforms, fans are buzzing about the possibility of a prequel focused on Daniel Craig’s character, Joe Bang. Craig’s captivating performance in the 2017 heist comedy showcased his versatility, featuring a quirky Southern accent that resonated with audiences. The character’s charm and the film’s critical acclaim have sparked discussions about a Joe Bang prequel or a Logan Lucky 2 as a logical progression.
Here’s the latest update on the potential of a Logan Lucky sequel and its chances of making it to the screen.
Why Was the Joe Bang Prequel Dropped?
Director Steven Soderbergh has revealed that plans for a sequel were abandoned due to underwhelming box office results.
In a recent discussion, Soderbergh shared insights that a prequel focusing on Craig’s character, Joe Bang, was intended to delve into the story of how he ended up in prison. However, the filmmaker cited the original film’s disappointing commercial performance as the reason for scrapping the sequel, stating, “We had a prequel all lined up about how Joe Bang got thrown in jail, but when the movie didn’t perform well enough to justify another installment, we dropped the idea.”
Craig’s portrayal of Joe Bang was a highlight of the film. The character, a talented explosives expert, played a crucial role in aiding Logan and his crew during their heist. After they broke Bang out of prison, he was enlisted to craft the explosive device that facilitated their audacious escape.
In discussions about the character’s development, Soderbergh mentioned that he provided Craig with complete creative freedom regarding his portrayal. “I told him, ‘I don’t care how you look or sound. And you don’t have to do any press if you don’t want to.’ I recognized that the promotional tour for Bond is, for him, more challenging than the filming,” he explained.
Soderbergh also noted, “Ideas trickled in from Craig—‘Here’s some tattoos. Here’s my haircut. I’m collaborating with a dialect coach.’ Then he arrived fully prepared.”
Is a Logan Lucky Sequel Possible Following Its Streaming Success?
Despite the movie’s renewed interest on streaming, Soderbergh and Craig have not indicated any plans for a sequel.
The film’s recent addition to Netflix, nearly eight years post-release, has reignited conversations about a potential prequel. Fans are hopeful, but the creators have yet to make any official announcements regarding a new project. As such, it appears unlikely that Craig will reprise his role as Joe Bang in the near future.
