Bryan Ferry has unveiled a brand new song titled “Star,” marking his first original release since 2014’s Avonmore. This new track, which features guest vocalist Amelia Barratt, originated as a concept developed by renowned musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The music video for “Star,” directed by Ferry and James Garzke, showcases Barratt’s talent. This single is the only fresh piece included in Ferry’s upcoming compilation, Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023, set to be released on October 5.
Since the release of Avonmore, Ferry has focused on recording covers for several projects, including his contribution to Todd Terje’s It’s Album Time with a rendition of Robert Palmer’s “Johnny and Mary.” This cover will feature on the fifth disc of Retrospective. The album announcement was accompanied by a reinterpretation of Bob Dylan’s classic “She Belongs to Me” from 1965.
In discussing the creation of “Star” and his collaboration with Barratt, Ferry expressed his admiration for her writing, noting that their partnership began during an audiobook project he helped her record in his studio. “This is the first song we did together, and I’m very excited about this new work—there’s a lot more to come,” Ferry stated.
