A highly anticipated remake of the iconic 1987 film La Bamba is officially in development.
The original La Bamba, directed and written by Luis Valdez, chronicles the inspiring life of legendary musician Ritchie Valens. The film featured notable performances by Lou Diamond Phillips as Valens and Esai Morales as his brother, Roberto “Bob” Morales, among others.
Current reports confirm that Mucho Mas Media and Sony Pictures are collaborating on a new adaptation of La Bamba.
Valdez will take on the role of executive producer for this upcoming version, with José Rivera set to pen the screenplay. Rivera is known for his work on acclaimed films including The Motorcycle Diaries and Letters to Juliet.
“La Bamba has not only remained a cultural touchstone but also a tribute to the enduring legacy of Ritchie Valens. The new film presents an opportunity to delve deeper into the life and artistry of Richard Valenzuela, celebrating his powerful influence,” Valdez stated.
Javier Chapa is producing the film for Mucho Mas Media, with an impressive team of executive producers that includes Sherrese Clarke Soares and others dedicated to capturing the essence of the original film.
“We’re privileged to revisit Ritchie’s story, honoring the impact of an extraordinary young Latino artist who moved countless lives through his music. We aim to celebrate and reverberate the magic that made the original film a beloved classic,” Chapa remarked.
