England has announced the selection of uncapped Warwickshire players Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia this September. Notably absent from the squad are seasoned players Moeen Ali and Jonny Bairstow.
The 20-year-old Bethell, a left-handed batter and spin bowler, earned his spot after impressively scoring 356 runs for Birmingham Bears during the Vitality Blast season, which included a spectacular 15-ball fifty against Northamptonshire.
Joining him is 23-year-old Mousley, also a left-handed batter and slow-bowling option, who accumulated 375 runs as the Bears advanced to the Blast quarter-finals.
England T20 Squad to Face Australia
Jos Buttler (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, John Turner.
England ODI Squad to Face Australia
Jos Buttler (captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner.
Other potential debutants include Leicestershire left-arm seamer Josh Hull and Hampshire quick John Turner, who both feature in the squads. Essex batter Jordan Cox is also included in the T20 lineup.
The exclusion of Bairstow and Moeen, both of whom have been key figures in the limited-overs format, raises questions about their futures in international cricket, especially following Bairstow’s omission from the Test squad earlier this summer.
Marcus Trescothick will step in as the interim head coach against Australia after Matthew Mott’s departure post the team’s semi-final exit in the T20 World Cup in June.
Carse and Mahmood Recalled; Captain Buttler Fit Following Injury
Durham’s Brydon Carse returns from a betting ban and is selected for both the T20 and ODI teams. Lancashire paceman Saqib Mahmood has also made a comeback to the T20 squad after taking three wickets in the final of The Hundred.
Jamie Smith, who has shown excellent form since becoming the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter, is included in the ODI squad.
The first T20 match is set for September 11 in Southampton, just after the conclusion of England’s three-Test series against Sri Lanka. Red-ball players, with the exception of Cox and Hull, are not present in this selection.
The ODI series kicks off on September 19 at Trent Bridge and wraps up on September 29 in Bristol. Captain Jos Buttler is fit to play after recovering from a calf injury, while all-rounders Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran feature in the T20 squad but not in the ODIs.
Looking ahead, the next men’s global white-ball event, the ICC Champions Trophy, will be held in Pakistan in February and March, with the subsequent T20 World Cup scheduled for early 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
