The Centre is facing allegations of neglecting the rights and safety of Tamil Nadu’s fishermen, as stated by the Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary in Tiruchi.
During a press briefing at the district CPI office in Milaguparai, he emphasized the inadequate protection for fishermen’s rights and possessions.
The CPI leader emphasized that the Chief Minister is frequently compelled to communicate with the Centre every time fishermen are apprehended by Sri Lankan authorities. He called on the government to clarify its position regarding the retrieval of Katchatheevu, an issue previously leveraged during campaigns against the Congress and DMK for allegedly ceding the island to Sri Lanka. He urged for a central responsibility to protect Tamil Nadu’s fishermen and sought a sustainable resolution to these ongoing challenges.
Furthermore, he advocated for the expedited completion of the national population census, which includes caste-based data, to ensure effective reservation and social justice.
The CPI is mobilizing for nationwide protests, including rallies and road blockades from September 1 to 7, to urge the Centre to tackle increasing prices burdening the public.
He also requested the Centre to classify the recent landslide in Wayanad, Kerala, as a national disaster and to allocate relief funds. He criticized the Prime Minister for visiting the disaster site without announcing financial aid, providing only vague promises of support.
Predicting the potential downfall of the BJP government, he stated that it would be incapable of lasting another five years if it continues to prioritize divisive agendas over critical public issues.
Regarding actor Vijay’s recent political maneuvers with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, he commented, “Let him start and run a political party. We will discuss it afterwards.”
