The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) is warning Nigerians to adopt preventive measures against the escalating threat of Mpox, emphasizing the importance of health and safety for all, particularly for those living with HIV.
Dr. Temitope Ilori, Director General of NACA, highlighted the increased vulnerability of individuals with compromised immune systems, stating, “While anyone can contract Mpox, individuals with HIV may experience more severe symptoms and should take extra precautions to protect themselves.”
NACA is closely monitoring the situation and collaborating with public health authorities to ensure that essential resources and information are accessible. “Our priority remains the health and well-being of Nigerians, especially those who are most vulnerable. We are dedicated to supporting people living with HIV as they navigate this additional health challenge,” Dr. Ilori stated.
She urged the public to stay vigilant and informed about Mpox, stressing the significance of early detection and treatment. “If you observe any unusual symptoms, such as a rash or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Early intervention is vital for effectively managing Mpox,” she advised.
Dr. Ilori also encouraged everyone, particularly those living with HIV, to stay informed, follow preventive measures, and seek timely medical advice. “Together, we can overcome this challenge and continue making progress in the fight against HIV and other public health concerns,” she added.
Mpox is a rare viral zoonotic disease found in several African countries, particularly in the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. The exact reservoir of the virus remains unclear, though rodents and primates are believed to be involved in its transmission, which can occur from animals to humans as well as between humans.
To mitigate the spread of Mpox, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention advises the public to avoid close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms, especially those with rashes or skin lesions. Additionally, maintaining good hand hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is strongly recommended.
