A tragic bus accident in Iran claimed the lives of 28 Pakistani pilgrims, as reported by Iranian state media. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in the central province of Yazd and preliminary investigations suggest that a defective braking system was to blame.
In addition to the fatalities, 23 passengers sustained injuries, with seven in critical condition, according to the provincial crisis management director during a state television broadcast. The pilgrims were en route to Iraq to honor a Shia saint who passed away in the 7th Century.
The deceased include 11 women and 17 men, as confirmed by the crisis management director. Currently, around two million Shia Muslim pilgrims are participating in the annual pilgrimage, which stretches approximately 80 kilometers from Najaf to Karbala in Iraq.
Iran’s road safety issues remain a significant concern, with traffic accidents resulting in approximately 20,000 deaths annually.
