Hollywood continues to embrace the video game film genre, with a notable new project in the works: a live-action adaptation of the classic Sega game, Eternal Champions. Following the successful releases of the Sonic the Hedgehog films, the anticipation for more video game adaptations remains high.
Skydance is set to produce the Eternal Champions film, which originally debuted on the Sega Genesis in 1993. The narrative centers around a high-stakes tournament aimed at selecting the next Eternal Champion, featuring characters from various timelines who compete until only one survives. The winner earns the chance to continue their life and fulfill their role as humanity’s champion, while the others are sent back to their moments of demise.
Derek Connolly, known for his work on hit films such as Jurassic World and Detective Pikachu, will pen the screenplay for this exciting project. His portfolio also includes the upcoming Legend of Zelda adaptation for Sony and a crossover film involving G.I. Joe and Transformers.
Toru Nakahara, a producer on the Sonic franchise, will oversee the Eternal Champions project on Sega’s behalf, with David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger representing Skydance. While a release date has yet to be confirmed, the momentum surrounding this film is generating significant interest in the gaming community and beyond.
