Multiple new Lord of the Rings games are currently in development, as confirmed by Embracer Group, the parent company of Middle-earth Enterprises. During its recent earnings briefing, Embracer announced that it is “actively testing and prototyping multiple new game concepts,” indicating a significant commitment to expanding the gaming universe of Middle-earth.
The company emphasized its intention to explore a diverse range of immersive and authentic gameplay set within the iconic world of Middle-earth. Embracer outlined its strategic approach to game development, prioritizing “authentic storytelling” through collaboration with creative teams and engagement with the community. “We believe that engaging deeply and early with the community is essential to creating experiences that truly resonate,” the company stated.
Lee Guinchard, the head of Lord of the Rings initiatives for Embracer, previously expressed aspirations for a renaissance in Lord of the Rings gaming. Currently, Embracer is partnering with Amazon Games to develop a new MMO based on the Middle-earth universe. Additionally, the charming title Tales of the Shire is set to launch later this year, with Guinchard hinting at several other unannounced projects in the works.
Over the years, the Lord of the Rings franchise has produced numerous classic games, including well-regarded movie tie-ins and popular titles like Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. The lighter tone of Lego Lord of the Rings and Lego The Hobbit also remains a fond memory for many fans.
However, not every adaptation has been well-received. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, released in 2023, faced significant criticism and low review scores, leading its developer to cancel a subsequent project and cease game development altogether.
In addition to gaming ventures, Embracer is collaborating with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema on multiple upcoming films, including The Hunt for Gollum, which will see Andy Serkis reprise his iconic role as Gollum in a directorial capacity.
