NEW YORK — Segway is recalling approximately 220,000 scooters across the U.S. due to a fall hazard that has led to various user injuries, from bruises to broken bones.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that the folding mechanism in Segway’s Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters may fail during use, potentially causing the handlebars or stem to unexpectedly fold.
The commission warns that this defect can result in serious injuries. The recent recall notice indicated that Segway has received 68 reports of folding mechanism failures, including 20 injuries ranging from abrasions and bruises to lacerations and broken bones.
Consumers currently using these recalled scooters are advised to cease usage immediately and contact Segway for a complimentary maintenance kit. This kit contains tools and detailed instructions for inspecting and adjusting the scooters’ locking mechanism as necessary.
Segway emphasizes the need for regular checks on the folding mechanism, which may wear with use over time depending on riding conditions. “No returns or replacements are involved,” the company stated.
The CPSC confirmed that the scooters subject to this recall were manufactured in China and Malaysia, sold at various U.S. retailers, and priced between $600 and $1,000. The products were available from January 2020 to February 2025.
