ECNETNews reports that the Enugu State Governor, Mr. Peter Mbah, has received praise for his substantial investments in education, primary healthcare, and infrastructure development. The commendation was expressed by a representative during the signing of the Enugu Government Multiyear 2025/2027 Workplan at the Government House in Enugu.
The Chief of Field Office highlighted Mbah’s leadership and significant contributions as a transformative factor for the state’s progress. She commended the governor for advocating for children’s and women’s welfare and for effectively addressing issues in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
“You are the pioneer of smart schools here. Enugu is one of the leading states in implementing the WASH masterplan,” she stated.
The representative emphasized Mbah’s notable investments in upgrading primary healthcare services and the establishment of smart schools, which reflect his commitment to enhancing human development in the region.
Having been in Enugu for three years, she remarked on the positive changes witnessed in infrastructure, security, and the welfare of women and children.
The signing of the multiyear plan signifies a renewed collaboration between UNICEF and the Enugu State Government to uphold the rights of children and women as part of the ongoing Country Programme of Cooperation, which runs until 2027.
She urged all stakeholders, including local authorities, to intensify efforts towards achieving Open Defecation Free status and ensuring the implementation of social protection policies to alleviate poverty.
Governor Mbah expressed gratitude for the partnership and continued support from UNICEF, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to tackling pressing social challenges as demonstrated in recent budget cycles. He noted that the education sector received a 33 percent allocation in the 2024 and 2025 budgets, with strong commitments to healthcare as well.
Mbah revealed that the administration plans to sustain these investment levels for at least the next five years to solidify the foundations for infrastructure improvement. He reported that many of the 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centers across the electoral wards have been completed and equipped with advanced medical facilities, including reliable electricity supply.
Addressing initial challenges, the governor stated he has approved the recruitment of 2,500 health workers to bridge the gap in healthcare personnel. Regarding the education system, Mbah confirmed that the smart schools initiative would commence by September, benefitting over 300,000 school children with comprehensive healthcare and nutritious meals.
Furthermore, the governor highlighted a commitment to improve living conditions for residents through the first phase of a 7,500 mass housing scheme aimed at addressing urban slums and eliminating open defecation.
