Dan Burn has shared that he has not yet celebrated Newcastle’s remarkable Carabao Cup victory as he focuses on his first call-up to the England national team. The 32-year-old defender scored Newcastle’s opening goal during their stunning Wembley win over Liverpool, marking a milestone in his career.
Following his unforgettable performance, Burn is eager to seize the opportunity to make his debut for England in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Albania, under the new management of Thomas Tuchel.
Burn expressed the shift in his mentality after the cup win. “As soon as I left the stadium on Sunday, my focus completely switched to this,” he stated. He mentioned that despite having family and friends at the celebration, he was ready for a good night’s sleep, emphasizing that he would rather celebrate with the club’s planned parade the following week.
Historically, Burn felt that he had been overlooked for prior England calls. “I think I have been overlooked, but I understood it. What Gareth Southgate did to bring England from where it was to competing in finals showed that his method was very good,” he shared. He now feels rejuvenated with the opportunity presented by Tuchel, stating, “It’s probably made me very resilient,” reflecting on his challenging career journey.
With aspirations set on making the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, Burn mentioned, “I’m trying to take it camp by camp. I just want to make a big impression and try and make the next camp.”
The recent transition in the England team’s management has led to significant changes, including Tuchel’s decision to alter training schedules for better match preparation. Observations around the dynamics between Tuchel and the players during training are highly anticipated.
Former player Paul Merson commented on the urgent need for a reset within the England setup, indicating that Tuchel will need time to establish his team and achieve success on the international stage.
