Rory McIlroy emphasizes he is “better than ever” as he gears up for the major season, asserting that his best performances are still ahead after winning his second PGA Tour title in just two months.
The world No. 2 claimed victory at The Players, following his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year. He secured the PGA Tour’s premier event for the second time, overcoming JJ Spaun in a thrilling Monday play-off.
This latest triumph is notable for McIlroy, as it marks the first time he has achieved two PGA Tour wins before The Masters, which remains the only major title missing from his quest for a career Grand Slam.
With an impressive record of 21 top 10 finishes in majors since his last victory at the 2014 PGA Championship, McIlroy has showcased remarkable consistency, finishing outside the top 20 only three times in his last 21 global starts.
“It’s an honor to join the ranks of multiple major and Players champions like Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Scottie Scheffler, and myself,” McIlroy noted following his win at TPC Sawgrass, bringing his total PGA Tour titles to 28.
“I feel like I’m a better player now than ever. The hard work is starting to pay off,” he added. “I’m a much more complete player, able to handle varied conditions effectively.”
Strategic Equipment Change Leads to Victory
McIlroy’s latest victory came after he made a crucial decision to revert to his original TaylorMade driver just days prior to the tournament. He even spent nearly $1,000 on an Uber to transport it for the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Despite a rocky start with only four fairways hit in his opening round, McIlroy surged in the final moments, pulling ahead by three strokes before facing more tension as he entered a play-off.
“The nerves I felt on that tee shot during the play-off was the highest I’ve experienced in a long time,” McIlroy admitted. His resilience despite anxiety enabled him to perform under pressure, an experience he hopes will aid him in upcoming tournaments.
Reflecting on his previous near-misses in major tournaments, he expressed confidence in his improved ability to manage crucial moments in competition.
McIlroy Eyes The Masters
With aspirations set on The Masters, McIlroy aims to continue refining his game in his upcoming PGA Tour start ahead of this prestigious event. He remains optimistic, stating, “I absolutely believe my best golf is yet to come.”
McIlroy’s focus on improvement underscores his commitment to staying competitive in a rapidly evolving sport, where younger athletes emerge with increasing skill each year. “I feel I still have a few great years left,” he concluded.
