CHICAGO — The Chicago River has once again transformed into a vibrant kelly green as the city kicks off its annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
Throngs of spectators gathered along the river and filled the bridges on Saturday, erupting in applause as local unions sprayed dye into the water from boats, continuing a beloved tradition that spans over six decades.
This colorful spectacle paves the way for the downtown St. Patrick’s Day parade that follows. This year, the celebration falls on Monday, honoring Irish culture and heritage, with St. Patrick recognized as the patron saint of Ireland and a key figure in introducing Christianity there in the fifth century.
The dye used is eco-friendly and safe, ensuring that while the river shines with its bright hue for several hours, traces of color may linger for days.
Additionally, a second St. Patrick’s Day parade is slated for Sunday on the South Side of Chicago, promising more festive celebrations.
