As of early 2025, Mongolia has experienced 11 forest-steppe fires, devastating 18,880 hectares primarily due to human negligence, accounting for approximately 90% of incidents.
Strong winds and storms are compounding the situation, with reports of forest-steppe fires emerging from three eastern provinces and Arkhangai province as of March 9. Fires have been confirmed in Dornod, Khentii, Sukhbaatar, and Arkhangai provinces.
The impact of these fires has left numerous families in distress, as their homes and livestock have been lost. In response, the National Emergency Management Agency is taking action by sending aid today, March 11, 2025, to support affected families. This initiative includes the distribution of gers and the establishment of a task force dedicated to providing medical care, organizing home reconstruction, offering psychological counseling, rehabilitating livestock, managing animal carcasses, and implementing disinfection efforts to restore livelihoods.
