Boy Found in Colorado After Seven-Year Disappearance
DENVER — A boy who was allegedly taken by his mother, who did not have custody, seven years ago from Atlanta has been discovered in Colorado following his mother’s arrest during an unrelated incident in suburban Denver, authorities reported.
Rabia Khalid, 40, was apprehended on February 23 after sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a suspected burglary at a vacant property for sale, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, deputies found two children in a vehicle outside and a man and woman exiting the home, who initially claimed to be working for a realtor.
As the investigation progressed, deputies identified the woman as Khalid, who had an active warrant related to the 2017 disappearance of her son, Abdul Aziz Khan, now 14 years old. The U.S. Marshals Service had been involved in the search for Khan, whose case was highlighted in a major True Crime series. Khan was identified as the older of the two children discovered in the vehicle.
Khalid and the man accompanying her were charged with second-degree kidnapping, forgery, and identity theft.
Currently, Khalid is being represented by a public defender’s office, which does not comment on cases.
Both children have been placed in protective custody, with the court set to make decisions regarding their future placements.
While Khalid’s family has requested privacy during this sensitive time, they expressed immense relief in a statement regarding the discovery of Abdul.
“We’re overwhelmed with joy that Aziz has finally been found. We want to thank everyone for their support over the last seven years,” they stated.
