APC National Executive Committee Meeting: Key Outcomes and Future Directions
The All Progressives Congress (APC) convened its National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, marking its first gathering since the appointment of Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as National Chairman nearly two years ago on August 3, 2023. This meeting was attended by prominent stakeholders, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, governors, and members of the National Working Committee.
Discussions at the NEC focused on vital topics such as economic recovery, intra-party reconciliation, and strategic governance ahead of the forthcoming 2027 elections. Prior to this assembly, some party members voiced concerns regarding the leadership’s approach to decision-making, with notable criticisms from former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai regarding a perceived deviation from the party’s founding principles.
The gathering served as a critical assessment of the party’s internal unity and preparedness as the nation heads closer to the elections. In a notable revelation, the NEC meeting followed a caucus meeting that yielded commendations for Tinubu’s administration, particularly regarding recent economic improvements, including a 3.84 percent GDP growth and decreasing inflation rates.
Validation of Leadership and Internal Dissent
A pivotal decision from the meeting was the reaffirmation of Dr. Ganduje as the National Chairman, dispelling rumors regarding his potential resignation. This decisive action also came on the heels of internal dissent from the North-Central faction, which had previously demanded Ganduje’s removal. In a surprising turn, the North-Central APC Forum announced a suspension of its protests, signaling a desire for unity within the party.
Additionally, the NEC expressed overwhelming support for President Tinubu’s economic strategies, passing a unanimous vote of confidence. In his address, Tinubu emphasized his commitment to enhancing the nation’s economic trajectory, assuring party members of a continued focus on addressing food security and fostering investments.
Challenges Facing the APC and Reconciliation Efforts
Despite the positive outcomes, the APC continues to grapple with internal strife, as various state chapters experience leadership conflicts and factional disputes that have disenfranchised some members. Tinubu urged the National Working Committee to initiate actions to resolve these conflicts and promote collaboration across the party.
Ganduje reported on ongoing efforts to reconcile members and handle grievances, indicating that these initiatives are gradually yielding positive results.
Moreover, the call for a new APC secretariat was raised, with Ganduje highlighting the inadequacy of the current facility and seeking presidential assistance for a new location. He acknowledged a debt inherited by the party of N8.9 billion, attributed primarily to litigation costs from past electoral contests.
Commitment to Development and Legislative Support
In a show of solidarity, both the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Tinubu’s administration, particularly in advancing legislation aimed at fostering national development and economic sustainability.
Despite the notable gathering, the absence of former President Muhammadu Buhari drew attention. His spokesperson explained that although the invitation arrived late, Buhari remains dedicated to the party’s success and continues to play an active role in APC affairs.
As the APC eyes the 2027 elections, these recent developments will undoubtedly shape its strategy and internal dynamics, positioning the party to address its challenges and capitalize on opportunities for growth and unity.
