ECNETNews confirms that Google has obtained FDA clearance for its innovative pulse detection feature, designed to assist smartwatch users in emergency medical situations.
This cutting-edge feature utilizes an AI-powered algorithm alongside a multipath heart rate sensor to identify “pulselessness” resulting from various medical emergencies, including cardiac arrest, poisoning, and respiratory failure. Upon detection, the smartwatch automatically contacts emergency services for assistance. The development process involved collaboration with cardiologists, resuscitation experts, and emergency medical personnel.
“In instances of pulse loss, immediate action is often needed, yet many events are unwitnessed, leaving countless individuals without necessary emergency care,” Google states.
The Pixel Watch 3 employs integrated heart rate monitors to identify any loss of pulse, prompting further sensor activity to check for movement or pulse indicators. If these checks yield no results, the device prompts the wearer with alerts. Failing to receive a response triggers an audible alarm and a countdown display on the watch, which then contacts emergency dispatch through LTE connectivity or a paired smartphone.
It’s important to note that this feature is not recommended for individuals with preexisting heart conditions or those in need of continuous cardiac monitoring.
The Loss of Pulse Detector feature was first introduced in August and has since expanded availability from select markets across Europe to 14 countries. A rollout for U.S. Pixel Watch 3 users is scheduled for March.
