In a recent statement, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra expressed his lack of concern regarding recent bombings in Thailand’s southern region, attributing his confidence to his prior experience with multiple assassination attempts.
This declaration came in response to a string of bombings in Yala province on Saturday night as well as at Narathiwat airport on Sunday morning, coinciding with Thaksin’s arrival.
“Efforts to intimidate me are futile. My resolve is strong. Past assassination attempts have not deterred me. No matter the circumstances, I can handle it,” said Thaksin during his visit.
He characterized the bombing at Narathiwat airport as a symbolic gesture and noted that the welcome he received during his trip was significantly warmer than the reactions he encountered during previous visits to the region two decades ago.
Thaksin viewed the current positive sentiment among residents as a promising indication for future peace initiatives in the southern provinces.
He emphasized the importance of international collaboration to address ongoing issues in these areas, highlighting Indonesia’s commitment to assist in the efforts.
“I anticipate meaningful progress this year,” stated Thaksin, who is also the father of current Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
He further discussed measures to enhance cooperation in countering cross-border terrorism, particularly involving individuals with dual citizenship.
Additionally, Thaksin addressed the need for dialogue to encourage wrongdoers to return to Thailand and engage in the nation’s development.
During his remarks, Thaksin also extended an apology for the Tak Bai massacre in Narathiwat in 2004, acknowledging the mistakes made under his administration while expressing empathy for the affected communities.
He reinforced his commitment to addressing the needs of the people and highlighted the principles of forgiveness within the Muslim community.
