Labour Party presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has clarified that he is not seeking a “free ticket” or “special treatment” as the party prepares for the 2027 election.
Speaking through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi addressed comments made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, who recently dismissed rumors of the party fielding Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, and other candidates in the upcoming poll.
This clarification follows a statement from factional National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi, who suggested that Obi would be the party’s candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid. In response to inquiries about Obi’s candidacy prospects, Ifoh firmly refuted any claims regarding an automatic nomination for Obi by the party.
Ifoh emphasized that the narrative suggesting otherwise is fundamentally flawed and did not originate from the recognized leadership. When asked how Obi is responding to threats of not receiving an automatic ticket, Umar stated that Obi remains unfazed by such matters, focusing instead on his commitment to democracy and the well-being of all Nigerians.
Umar reaffirmed, “Peter Obi remains steadfast in his commitment to democracy and the necessity for healthy competition, which are vital for a thriving democratic environment. It is important to highlight that he has never requested special treatment. Rather, he advocates for a level playing field for all candidates.”
He urged supporters and the public to concentrate on significant issues rather than becoming distracted by misleading narratives. “Peter Obi’s unwavering dedication to good governance, economic development, and social equity is clear. Let us join forces to create a brighter future for Nigeria rooted in democracy, fairness, and equality,” Umar concluded.
