In a critical development ahead of the local government elections in Osun State, the Nigeria Police Force has urgently recommended the suspension of the planned elections. The call comes following joint intelligence assessments indicating that various groups, including political factions, are organizing to incite unrest and disrupt public order.
Tension in Osun has escalated due to ongoing disputes concerning local government administration, particularly between the PDP and APC over the legitimacy of past and current officials. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice recently urged the governor to halt the elections.
The Attorney General highlighted a recent Court of Appeal ruling in Akure, which overturned a previous Federal High Court judgment that invalidated the local government elections conducted under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
Despite these pressing concerns, Governor Ademola Adeleke remains firm on proceeding with the elections as scheduled.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has reported credible intelligence suggesting a high risk of violence associated with the elections. He stated, “The Nigeria Police Force has received credible intelligence indicating a high likelihood of violence and significant security threats should the planned local government elections proceed in Osun State.”
In light of this potential for unrest, Adejobi stressed that suspending the elections could enhance public safety and national stability. “Given this imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability,” he remarked.
He further emphasized that the current security landscape suggests a precarious situation, where proceeding with the elections may lead to widespread unrest, risking lives and property.
Adejobi reiterated that while security agencies are prepared to maintain order, it is vital that all stakeholders prioritize the safety of citizens. The Nigeria Police Force’s recommendations reflect a deep concern for public welfare amidst ongoing legal complications and heightened security threats related to the upcoming elections.
