A former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, has stated that Ibrahim Babangida, a former military Head of State, was fortunate to have the opportunity to apologize to Nigerians for his past actions.
Aliyu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party, emphasized that the former military leader deserves forgiveness, particularly concerning the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Recently, Babangida expressed regret over the annulment during the launch of his autobiography, “A Journey In Service,” held in Abuja. He acknowledged the Social Democratic Party candidate, Moshood Abiola, as the rightful winner of the election.
In his book, Babangida referred to the annulment as an “accident of history” and upon deeper reflection, conceded that the evidence clearly supports Abiola’s victory in the June 12 election.
During an appearance on a local news program, Aliyu highlighted the importance of Babangida’s memoir for the nation, praising the former leader for his apology. “I consider today one of the luckiest days for Ibrahim Babangida. After 32 years, he had the chance to make amends with the Nigerian people,” said Aliyu.
He continued, “The unveiling of his memoir signifies a profound moment for Nigeria. Babangida has always demonstrated strong leadership qualities, and his sense of forgiveness and generosity is commendable.”
