In a significant ruling on Wednesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja denied the request of Peoples Democratic Party National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, aimed at halting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from enforcing his removal from the position.
Justice Inyang Ekwo mandated Anyanwu to inform INEC and the other defendants about the proceedings, ensuring they have an opportunity to present their case.
Anyanwu, represented by his counsel, sought an urgent court order to prevent INEC or its representatives from accepting or acting upon any communications from the PDP that were not signed by him. He also requested a restriction on the acting National Chairman, Amb Umar Damagum, regarding the submission of any documents to INEC without his authorization.
After reviewing the situation, Justice Ekwo acknowledged the urgent nature of the case but emphasized that the reliefs sought through the ex parte application could not be granted without hearing from the defense.
Consequently, he directed Anyanwu to serve legal documents to INEC and Damagum, scheduling both parties to appear in court on February 24 for further proceedings.
PDP Cross River Chapter Calls for Unity
In another development, the Cross River State chapter of the PDP has urged for a peaceful resolution to ongoing internal disputes among party leaders while advocating for a reorganization of the party in preparation for the 2027 elections.
During a Wednesday meeting at their secretariat in Calabar, under the leadership of acting State Chairman Denis Nkiri, and attended by 31 members of the State Executive Committee, the chapter expressed support for regional governors in enhancing party structure and unity.
A faction within the party has called for a zonal congress to be held in Calabar, breaking the established tradition of hosting it in Port Harcourt, the party’s zonal headquarters.
The Cross River State chapter endorsed the decisions made by the South-South governors of the party, emphasizing adherence to established procedures for the upcoming congresses.
A communiqué issued by the executive members reiterated that all zonal congresses should take place at designated headquarters, aligning with past practices.
The communiqué stated, “The State Executive Committee disassociates itself from any zonal congresses convened in Calabar and reaffirms its commitment to party constitution and principles for stability and growth.”
The SEC encouraged party leaders to prioritize the collective interests of the PDP to secure victories in the upcoming elections.
“It is imperative for all leaders to be inclusive and consider diverse opinions as we aim to elect capable officials during the crucial South-South zonal congresses, vital for our success,” the communiqué concluded.
