Meta has unveiled new policies for Facebook live broadcasts, signaling a significant shift that may lead to a considerable amount of video deletions.
Starting February 19, all Facebook live broadcasts will only be accessible on Facebook Pages or profiles for a duration of 30 days, after which they will be permanently deleted. This policy, announced on Tuesday, emphasizes a new timeline for content management.
While current live videos older than 30 days won’t be deleted immediately, users must act quickly if they wish to preserve them.
“Users will receive notifications via email and in the app before their archived live videos are deleted, giving them 90 days to download or transfer their content,” according to the announcement. The platform is also launching new tools aimed at simplifying the process of downloading previous live videos.
Meta’s evolving content strategy
For those wanting to retain their live videos, several options are available. Users can download their videos either individually or in bulk, transfer them to personal cloud storage, or convert the videos into new Reels.
Although the rationale behind this policy change isn’t explicitly stated, it appears to align with Meta’s ongoing focus on promoting vertical videos and Reels. This shift may suggest an effort to encourage users to convert their live broadcasts into more current content formats.
