The Delhi High Court has issued a stern warning to the Railways regarding the recent stampede at New Delhi railway station that claimed the lives of 18 individuals. The court raised critical questions about the practice of selling tickets beyond the passenger capacity of each coach.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice and Justice expressed concerns while addressing a petition focused on implementing safety measures to avert future stampedes at railway stations. The bench questioned, “If you fix the number of passengers to be accommodated in a coach, why do you sell tickets exceeding that number? This is a significant issue that needs addressing.”
This ruling highlights the urgent need for the Railways to reassess its ticketing policies in the interest of passenger safety.
