Anna Meares Condemns Online Criticism of Breakdancer Rachael Gunn
Australian Olympic legend Anna Meares has expressed her disappointment over the social media backlash directed at breakdancer Rachael Gunn regarding her performance and choice of attire.
Gunn, 36, competed in the debut of breakdancing as an Olympic event but faced tough competition, finishing her three round-robin contests without winning a single round, with an aggregate score of 54-0.
Competing under the name Raygun, Gunn wore a green and yellow Australian Olympic tracksuit, contrasting with her competitors who opted for trendy streetwear. This choice has drawn harsh comments online, with some mocking her unique stage presence and performance style, which included playful movements reminiscent of a kangaroo and moments where she stood on her head.
In defense of her artistic expression, Gunn stated, "I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative. How many chances do you get in a lifetime to do that on an international stage? I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way."
Meares, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and the Australian team’s chef de mission for the upcoming Games in Paris, criticized the negativity online. She stated, "I think that what has occurred on social media with trolls and keyboard warriors has been really disappointing."
At a news conference, Meares praised Gunn’s courage and character, stating, "I love her courage. I feel very disappointed for her that she has come under attack."
