ECNETNews reports that Meta aims to become a leader in the robotics marketplace by developing its own humanoid robot hardware, with plans to create an AI-driven system to support these robots. The initiative will be directed by a newly formed hardware division within Meta’s Reality Labs, which also oversees Quest VR and Ray-Ban smart glasses. Initially, the focus will be on creating robots that assist with household tasks, although the company has indicated that plans for a Meta-branded robot butler are not currently in motion but remain a possibility for the future.
According to sources, Meta is engaging with various robotics enterprises as part of its strategy to leverage existing software, sensors, and computing technology that powers its Reality Labs projects, as well as collaborations with manufacturers. The newly established division will prioritize the development of safety standards for these robots.
Meta’s Chief Technology Officer emphasized that the core technologies developed within Reality Labs and its AI initiatives are well-suited for the advancements required in the robotics sector. He stated, “We believe that expanding our portfolio to invest in this field will only accrue value to Meta AI and our mixed and augmented reality programs.”
In related news, Meta recently announced a round of layoffs impacting at least 4,000 employees globally as part of an ongoing efficiency strategy aimed at streamlining its workforce and enhancing its focus on AI. Prior to this, the company had realigned its internal structure to boost resources for its generative AI team and expedited hiring for machine learning roles.
