An Ohio man has pleaded guilty to charges related to failing to pay over $750,000 in employment taxes and not filing the required employment tax returns. The Department of Justice has reported that Eric Moesle, the former office manager for a dental practice in Pataskala, was responsible for payroll, bookkeeping, and tax return preparation from 2014 to 2020.
As part of his responsibilities, Moesle oversaw the withholding of Social Security, Medicare, and income taxes from employee wages. However, he did not ensure these withheld taxes were submitted to the IRS, nor did he file the necessary employment tax returns. Additionally, the practice failed to pay its employer tax obligations during this timeframe.
During a 2022 interview with IRS representatives, Moesle falsely asserted that he was unaware of the unpaid taxes and unfiled tax returns, claiming any omissions were unintentional. His actions led to a total tax loss of $760,255 to the IRS.
Moesle’s guilty plea was presented to a U.S. Magistrate Judge, with a sentencing date to be determined. He faces up to five years in prison, supervised release, and potential monetary penalties, with the final sentence to be decided by a federal district court judge based on applicable guidelines and factors.
The investigation is being conducted by the IRS Criminal Investigation unit, with prosecution by attorneys from the Justice Department’s Tax Division.
