Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Marseille, France, where he honored the legacy of freedom fighter V D Savarkar, who notably made a daring escape attempt in the city. This visit underscores the historical significance Marseille holds in India’s fight for independence.
Upon his arrival, Modi stated, “Landed in Marseille. In India’s quest for freedom, this city holds special significance. It was here that the great Veer Savarkar attempted a courageous escape.” He also expressed gratitude to the residents of Marseille and the French activists of that era who advocated against Savarkar’s extradition to British authorities, saying, “The bravery of Veer Savarkar continues to inspire generations.”
In a late-night update, Modi announced, “President Macron and I reached Marseille a short while ago. This visit will witness important programs aimed at further connecting India and France. The inauguration of the Indian consulate will enhance people-to-people ties. I will also pay tribute to the Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the First and Second World Wars.”
During the British colonial period, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar sought to escape captivity on July 8, 1910, while being transported to India aboard the British ship Morea. He managed to slip through a porthole and swim to shore, only to be recaptured by French authorities and returned to British custody, which led to a significant diplomatic incident. Savarkar was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment at Cellular Jail in the Andaman Islands.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Marseille includes the inauguration of the new Consulate General of India alongside French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders have planned several activities for Wednesday, including a tribute to Indian soldiers at the Mazargues War Cemetery.
Additionally, their itinerary features a tour of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), a key international nuclear fusion project. Earlier, both leaders participated in the AI Action Summit and the 14th India-France CEOs Forum.
