In a remarkable display of talent, Scotland’s Charlie Cassell achieved a historic milestone by recording the best bowling figures on a One Day International debut, taking 7 wickets for just 21 runs against Oman. This outstanding performance came in just 5.4 overs.
The 25-year-old made an explosive entrance, claiming wickets with his first two deliveries and finishing off his opening over with a third wicket. Cassell’s performance surpassed the previous record held by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, who took 6-16 against Bangladesh in July 2015.
Cassell’s bowling heroics began with an lbw dismissal of Zeshan Masqood in Dundee, followed by the dismissal of Ayaan Khan with his next ball. Although he narrowly missed a hat-trick, he secured his third wicket, that of Khalid Kail, off his fourth delivery.
Continuing his onslaught, Cassell helped dismantle the Oman batting lineup, which was bowled out for just 91 runs in 21.4 overs. He rounded off his impressive performance by claiming the final wicket of Bilal Khan.
With his remarkable figures, Cassell now ranks as having the seventh-best bowling performance in men’s ODI history. Notably, only one player, Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas, has claimed eight wickets in an ODI, achieving the feat against Zimbabwe in Colombo in 2001.
In response to Oman’s total, Scotland chased down the target swiftly in 17.2 overs, securing victory by eight wickets. Brandon McMullen led the chase with an unbeaten 37 runs off 43 balls, while skipper Richie Berrington contributed 24 not out from 28 balls, and George Munsey added 23 off 26, following an early dismissal of Charlie Tear for just four runs.
