Gaza’s civil defense agency has reported a tragic airstrike by Israeli forces on a shelter located within a school in Gaza City, resulting in significant loss of life. The attack, described as targeting a Hamas command center, has left at least 90 individuals dead and injured numerous others.
The incident occurred on Saturday in the Daraj district, where agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal noted that three Israeli rockets struck the school, which was housing many displaced Palestinians. He characterized the situation as a “horrific massacre,” with rescue teams working tirelessly to control the fire and assist the wounded.
The Israeli military responded with a statement claiming that the strike was a precise operation against Hamas militants using the Al-Taba’een school as a base for their command and control activities. Previous reports indicated that Israeli forces had targeted similar Hamas facilities in educational institutions throughout Gaza City earlier in the week.
The conflict has escalated significantly since the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. This assault has sparked an intense military campaign by Israel in Gaza, leading to an alarming death toll of over 39,600 Palestinians, as reported by Gaza’s health ministry. The ongoing violence continues to have devastating impacts on civilians in the region.
