Belgian golfer Thomas Detry achieved a significant milestone by securing his first PGA Tour victory at the WM Phoenix Open, triumphing by an impressive seven strokes. Finishing the tournament at 24-under par, Detry has made history as the first Belgian to win on the PGA Tour.
American players Michael Kim and Daniel Berger both concluded the tournament strongly, carding final rounds of 67 to tie for second place at 17-under par. Detry faced a momentary challenge when Berger sank his fifth birdie at the 15th hole, narrowing the lead to just two shots. However, Detry quickly reaffirmed his dominance with a birdie of his own, followed by a stunning approach on the par-three 16th, leading to another birdie and sealing his victory with three consecutive birdies.
In a heartfelt celebration on the 18th green, Detry was joined by his wife and children before being doused in champagne by tournament colleague Matt Wallace, who finished the week at six under.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Jordan Spieth finished just behind Detry, both finishing at 16-under par. Notably, Justin Thomas made an impressive eagle from 102 yards on the last hole, joining a tie for sixth with Will Chandler and Robert MacIntyre.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who began the day eight shots behind Detry, made an early charge by going four-under in the first six holes. However, his momentum halted as he encountered difficulties on the back nine, finishing with a disappointing one-over round, placing him tied for 25th—his first finish outside the top 20 since last June’s US Open.
