A prominent human rights lawyer has condemned the Anambra State Government for the recent arrest of Chidozie Nwangwu, a well-known native doctor recognized for his extravagant lifestyle. Nwangwu, also referred to as ‘Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki’, was detained by operatives of Anambra’s security agency, Agunechemba.
The news of Nwangwu’s arrest, which has gone viral, was initially shared via the Anambra State Government’s official channels on Saturday. In a statement released on Sunday, the lawyer criticized the action, asserting that it infringes upon fundamental rights and raises concerns over potential abuses of governmental power for personal or political agendas.
The lawyer demanded Nwangwu’s immediate and unconditional release, emphasizing that the arrest and ongoing detention are not only illegal but also set a troubling precedent that threatens the freedoms of religion and expression within the state.
In his statement, the lawyer expressed profound concern over the allegations against Nwangwu, which arose in connection to a viral video where he supposedly discussed preparing a substance called ‘Okeite’. The lawyer clarified that this video was not published on Nwangwu’s official platforms or endorsed by him.
He highlighted that, according to Nigeria’s Constitution, every citizen is granted unequivocal rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and expression. Specifically, he pointed to Sections 38 and 39, which protect the rights to religious practice and freedom of expression, thereby underscoring that the native doctor has been unfairly targeted for his personal beliefs and expressions.
The lawyer further noted that Nwangwu, a respected traditional doctor, has always maintained an ethical approach in his practice, encouraging individuals with legitimate means of livelihood to seek his services. He reiterated that if Nwangwu’s detention is solely linked to the viral video, it constitutes an unlawful act and warrants condemnation.
The statement concluded with a call for the Anambra State Government to act swiftly and remedy this situation, cautioning against any misuse of state resources for personal or political vendettas. The community is urged to uphold the rights of all citizens and to resist any attempts to compromise these fundamental freedoms.
