ROSWELL, Ga. — Authorities are investigating the tragic shooting of a police officer in Roswell, Georgia, by a suspect who is now in custody.
The incident occurred on Friday night when the officer responded to reports of a suspicious individual in the parking lot of a local pickleball club, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
During the encounter, the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Edward Espinoza, brandished a handgun and fired multiple shots at the officer, who has yet to be named. The officer later succumbed to injuries at a hospital.
Espinoza has been taken into custody and is facing serious charges, including murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Current online records do not indicate whether Espinoza has legal representation. Questions to local public defense offices remained unanswered.
The case will be forwarded to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for potential prosecution, according to the GBI.
Roswell is situated approximately 25 miles north of Atlanta.
The Roswell Police Department released a statement, emphasizing their priority to support the family of the deceased officer and provide assistance to their grieving department while more information will be shared in the coming days.
