Fernanda Lima, 47, expressed her astonishment at the recent request from the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro for the imprisonment of singer Eduardo Costa, 46. This request stems from a lawsuit filed by Lima herself. Back in 2018, Costa referred to Fernanda as “imbecile” and criticized her television show “Amor & Sexo,” broadcasting accusations of it being “leftist” and catering to “bandits and drug dealers.”
The announcement regarding Costa’s potential imprisonment came on Wednesday, October 5. The court accepted Lima’s legal action, determining that the singer had abused his rights by defaming her. Initially, Costa faced an eight-month detention sentence for his remarks and was ordered to pay R$ 70,000 in damages. This sentence was later converted to community service; however, it is reported that he has not fulfilled this obligation.
Lima’s legal team issued a statement clarifying that she has not been involved in the ongoing case since the initial ruling. “It is important to emphasize that Fernanda has not requested any further measures at this stage of the process,” the statement read.
The Public Ministry has requested that the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice replace Costa’s restrictive penalties with imprisonment. If the request is granted, Costa could face arrest at any time. A notification from the IV Special Criminal Court of the Capital confirmed that the Public Ministry has moved for the conversion of his punishment due to his failure to adhere to previous court orders.
In response to the Public Ministry’s actions, Eduardo Costa took to social media to comment on the situation. In posts on his Instagram stories early Thursday morning, he dismissed the request as “fake news.”
While Costa denied the existence of a conviction in the lawsuit initiated by Lima, he acknowledged that the process is still active and “will take time because it pertains to comments made many years ago.” He further emphasized the importance of being cautious with one’s words in today’s society.
