ECNETNews, New York, NY, Feb. 6, 2025: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has apprehended two Caribbean nationals in Massachusetts, including a Haitian man charged with assault and a Dominican national with a previous murder conviction.
On January 22, ICE officers arrested Jean Yves Ovilme, a 37-year-old Haitian national, in Boston. Ovilme entered the United States legally on November 10, 2023, through Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but later violated his admission terms. He was charged with indecent assault and battery on a person aged 14 or older in West Roxbury District Court on November 20, 2024. ICE issued an immigration detainer that same day, but Ovilme was released by Massachusetts authorities on January 3, 2025. He is currently in ICE custody pending further proceedings.
In a related case, ICE officers arrested Cesar Augusto Polanco, a 59-year-old Dominican national, on January 24 at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Norfolk after his release from state custody. Polanco legally entered the U.S. at John F. Kennedy International Airport on March 18, 1990, and was convicted of murder on March 8, 2007. He received a life sentence with the possibility of parole. Despite an order for his removal to the Dominican Republic issued on June 25, 2014, he remained in state custody until recently. The Massachusetts Correctional Institution complied with ICE’s immigration detainer, facilitating a smooth transfer to ICE custody.
The acting director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston Field Office underscored the agency’s commitment to public safety by removing individuals who pose risks to communities. “We will not allow our communities to be subjected to the danger posed by violent offenders,” the director stated.
Both individuals are now in ICE custody as they await further legal proceedings.
