Jack Kennedy Optimistic About Cheltenham Return After Injury Recovery
Jack Kennedy revealed a 75% chance of returning to the saddle at the Cheltenham Festival after breaking his leg for the sixth time last November. Speaking in a recent podcast, Kennedy, who is currently recovering from his injury, expressed hope for a comeback just in time for the prestigious equestrian event.
The 25-year-old jockey, recovering since his fall from Twoohthree at Fairyhouse last year, has shared that his treatment is progressing well as he gears up for the festival. “The physios and surgeon are happy with it,” he stated, mentioning a follow-up hospital visit on the 25th of this month for an update on his condition.
Kennedy reflected on his rehabilitation, acknowledging that he has learned from past experiences. “I’m probably not a great patient,” he admitted, stating that he has been disciplined this time around to prevent setbacks. With his determination evident, he expressed frustration with inactivity.
Having missed significant rides at the Cheltenham Festival in previous years—most notably during 2023—Kennedy is eager to make his mark. “I’m in a lot better place this time around, a lot further along,” he noted, although he admitted he still has a bit of a limp from previous injuries.
As he undergoes regular rehabilitation sessions, Kennedy is focused on gradually regaining strength. He remarked, “It’s all leg exercises with the physio… and I just do what they tell me.”
Despite speculation regarding his ability to bounce back from serious injuries, Kennedy remains unfazed. He boasted a 19% strike-rate in Ireland over the last year, reassuring fans of his commitment to the sport. “I don’t take too much notice of it. It’s all part of the job,” he said.
During his time away from competitive riding, Kennedy has watched his peers succeed from the sidelines. “Nothing’s ever certain about getting back on them, but I’ll be hoping,” he remarked, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of his absence from the track.
As he looks forward to potential mounts, Kennedy is particularly interested in Gigginstown mare Brighterdaysahead, who has shown exceptional form this season. “I’ve always loved her,” he said, reflecting on her performance and potential.
With the excitement building for the Cheltenham Festival, Kennedy remains focused on his recovery, setting his sights on the remarkable horses he hopes to ride in the near future. “In terms of impressive horses, the obvious one is Galopin Des Champs,” he noted, while also praising Kopek Des Bordes.
As for his chances of participating in March, he confidently stated, “I don’t know, maybe 75 percent.” Fans and followers eagerly await confirmation of his return to competitive riding at Cheltenham.
