The Ogun State Police Command reported a tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday at approximately 7:15 AM, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving five others with serious injuries.
The incident involved a Toyota Sienna space bus with the registration number EPE 430 HT, operated by Adewale Yusuf, and a stationary luxury bus (plate number KTU 835 XY) owned by Young Shall Grow Transport Company and driven by Chukwudi Ilo from Anambra State.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Omolola Odutola indicated that the luxury bus had come to a stop in traffic due to a minor accident ahead. The Toyota Sienna, traveling at high speed, subsequently lost control and collided with the back of the luxury bus.
As a result of the collision, five passengers in the Sienna sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Live Well Hospital in Sagamu. Unfortunately, two male passengers, one identified as Charles Izuchukwu, an employee of Babcock University, and another whose identity remains unknown, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
The bodies have been taken to Last Home Green Mortuary in Sagamu. Meanwhile, the driver of the Sienna and two other injured passengers are currently receiving medical care.
The Motor Traffic Department promptly responded to the scene, documenting the incident and clearing the wreckage to restore normal traffic flow. Both vehicles have been towed to the MTD Office in Sagamu for further examination.
The police command reiterated that reckless driving, excessive speeding, and negligence are major factors contributing to road accidents. Furthermore, they emphasized the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using expired or substandard tires, and a general lack of focus on the road.
Motorists, especially commercial drivers, are urged to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid behaviors that jeopardize safety. The police also warned against substance abuse and stressed the importance of ensuring vehicle roadworthiness before any journey.
Committed to enforcing traffic regulations to reduce road fatalities, the police stated that violators of road safety laws will face legal consequences. The public is encouraged to report reckless drivers and unsafe road conditions to local authorities.
