Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh issued a stern warning on Sunday regarding strict penalties for those who obstruct the ongoing anti-drug campaign. This directive came in response to a recent incident where a mob vandalized police vehicles during a protest against the destruction of poppy cultivation in Kangpokpi district.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed his commitment to the anti-drug initiative, highlighting that over 25 acres of illegal poppy fields, a significant source of illicit opium, had been destroyed. “As part of our intensified war on drugs mission, more than 25 acres of illegal poppy plantations were successfully eliminated today in the Khudei Khullen hill range, Tengnoupal subdivision,” he announced.
In light of the disturbances, an FIR has been lodged, and law enforcement has implemented additional security measures. A large group, armed with sticks, reportedly gathered to obstruct the operation, vandalizing three police vehicles and threatening officers to cease the destruction efforts. As tensions rose, a reinforcement team led by the Kangpokpi Superintendent of Police intervened to restore order and ensure the continuation of the operation.
Singh also commended the efforts of Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, in combating illegal poppy cultivation and drug trafficking, emphasizing the united front both states are maintaining toward achieving a drug-free future.
The Assam Chief Minister recently announced the destruction of approximately 170 bighas (over 56 acres) of poppy crops valued at more than Rs 27 crore in Goalpara district earlier this year.
In a strong statement, the Manipur government reiterated its dedication to intensifying efforts against illicit poppy cultivation, emphasizing that any attempts to disrupt the War on Drugs campaign will face severe consequences.
