In a significant breakthrough, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a central figure in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) recruitment scam in West Bengal. This arrest follows a series of coordinated raids, as officials announced recently.
The suspect, Mahesh Kumar Choudhary, who serves as a sepoy at the Engineering Store Depot (ESD) in West Bengal, has been linked to a criminal network involved in generating fraudulent documents. The investigation revealed his role in creating forged domicile certificates, falsely asserting residency in West Bengal’s districts, including those impacted by Naxal militancy.
Choudhary is accused of facilitating the illegitimate hiring of ineligible candidates for CAPF roles. The inquiry has uncovered substantial financial transactions, with him allegedly collecting large sums of money from candidates, both directly and through intermediaries, in exchange for job placements.
This case was initiated by the CBI in August 2023, following directives from the Calcutta High Court. Choudhary was taken into custody on January 31 after extensive searches were conducted at several sites. He has since been presented before the CBI court in Alipore and is currently in five days of police custody.
