ECNETNews has announced the initiation of the Tender for the highly anticipated Tuul Highway project, set to kick off in April 2025 and expected to be completed within 24 months. This major infrastructure development spans 32 kilometers, connecting the Bayanzurkh bridge to a traffic circle in the Songinokhairkhan district, which serves as a crucial route to the western provinces. Notably, the Tuul Highway will be Ulaanbaatar’s first six-lane highway, designed without traffic lights or crossroads.
The city mayor highlighted the critical need for this project due to escalating traffic congestion:
-In 2024, Ulaanbaatar’s traffic jams are projected to cost approximately 900 million USD in lost time and fuel. If the current trend continues, this figure could surpass 1 billion USD by 2030. Currently, average speeds during rush hours are just 7-13 km per hour, which could drop to 5-9 km per hour by 2030. To combat these challenges, we will prioritize the construction of dual-level roads, with the Tuul Highway being a key component.
Once operational, the highway is expected to enhance average traffic speeds by 13.5 percent and significantly improve the flow of vehicles traveling to Darkhan and Zamyn-Uud. As a result, congestion on Ulaanbaatar’s primary and secondary road networks is anticipated to decrease by 10-20 percent. Future dual-level roadways will seamlessly connect with the Tuul Highway, paving the way for a more efficient transportation system.
