Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with other dignitaries including the Chief Minister and officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), will attend the NDRF Raising Day celebrations on January 19 at the 10th Battalion headquarters in Krishna district. This event commemorates two decades of NDRF’s dedicated service in disaster management.
The establishment of the NDRF was facilitated by the Disaster Management Act enacted on December 6, 2005, which also led to the formation of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). The NDRF comprises personnel drawn from various Central Armed Police Forces, including the Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, and Central Reserve Police Force, among others.
With a total of 16 battalions, the NDRF plays a crucial role in responding to emergencies such as floods, earthquakes, and industrial accidents, both domestically and internationally. Since its inception, the NDRF has successfully saved approximately 155,000 lives and performed over 800,000 evacuations during disasters.
In Andhra Pradesh, the NDRF is actively engaged in rescue and rehabilitation missions during diverse calamities, including floods and cyclones, as noted by the Commandant of the 10th Battalion.
In preparation for Mr. Shah’s visit, extensive security measures are being put in place by the local police in Krishna and NTR Commissionerate. Mr. Shah is expected to arrive in Vijayawada on January 18, with scheduled visits to NDRF and NIDM campuses the following day.
