Chris Billam-Smith Eyes Badou Jack and WBC Cruiserweight Title in Comeback Plans
Chris Billam-Smith is setting his sights on reclaiming the WBC cruiserweight title, currently held by Badou Jack, after a challenging setback in November. Billam-Smith faced Gilberto Ramirez, who decisively won a lopsided decision to unify the WBO and WBA titles.
Having regrouped from that defeat, Billam-Smith is eager for a shot at the WBC belt. “I’m back training and feeling great. I’m really invigorated and motivated,” he stated. “I’d love the Badou Jack fight. I think he’s tied up with mandatory challenger Ryan Rozicki, but I’m keen on that match.”
Ranked No. 4 by the WBC, Billam-Smith believes he can return as a better fighter after sharing the ring with Ramirez. “He was superb and a very special fighter. It was a valuable experience for me to learn from,” Billam-Smith reflected. However, he admitted that the loss was tough to take, acknowledging he was outperformed in that bout.
In another related development, British cruiserweight Jack Massey is also looking toward a comeback after suffering a defeat at the hands of IBF champion Jai Opetaia. “The positives to take from my fight are that I can say I’ve got a good chin,” Massey remarked with a laugh. He expressed confidence in returning to elite competition, emphasizing that losing to an elite fighter like Opetaia is nothing to be ashamed of.
Massey is eager for a high-profile encounter with Billam-Smith, stating, “We’re looking to get back out in March or April. After that, we can push for something big.” The two have a history; Massey defeated Billam-Smith over a decade ago in the amateur ranks.
The potential clash between Billam-Smith and Massey is gaining attention as both fighters aim for a title shot. “It definitely makes sense, and it would be a great fight,” Massey added.
However, Billam-Smith remains focused on championship-level competition and is not currently considering a matchup with Massey. “To me, it doesn’t make sense. I want to fight at world title level. That’s my objective,” he concluded.
As both fighters navigate their paths back into contention, the boxing community watches closely for their next moves.
