The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away. The tragic news was confirmed in a statement from the House Spokesman on Wednesday evening.
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Rt Hon Adewunmi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State. She passed away earlier today, January 15, 2025, following a brief illness.”
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was a dedicated public servant and a passionate advocate for her constituents. She was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress and served as Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development during the 9th Assembly, championing policies aimed at empowering women and enhancing social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, she took on the role of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, showcasing exceptional leadership and a strong commitment to maintaining legislative discipline.
Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya’, Onanuga was admired for her intellect, humility, and drive for excellence. Her significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her dedication to creating a better society.
