Strong Winds Cause Pedestrian Bridge Collapse, Closing Major Highway South of Anchorage
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The main highway south of Anchorage was closed in both directions early Sunday after strong winds led to the collapse of the side fencing and roof of a pedestrian bridge.
Thankfully, there were no injuries reported when the structure fell onto the Seward Highway, as confirmed by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
A highway worker reported the debris around 2:30 a.m. Traffic was promptly rerouted, and crews equipped with saws and front-end loaders successfully cleared the roadway by 6:30 a.m., according to department officials.
“While it is early to determine the cause of the incident, the high winds are likely a significant factor,” an official stated.
The main structure of the walkway, which spans the four-lane highway, an entrance ramp, and an outer road, remains intact. This bridge serves as a crucial link between a neighborhood and an elementary school.
Winds during the incident reached speeds of over 20 mph (32 kilometers per hour). Severe weather conditions, including heavy rain, snow, and winds exceeding 60 mph (96 kilometers per hour), were forecasted later on Sunday, as reported by the National Weather Service.
