In a significant move towards justice reform, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted pardons to 40 prison inmates. This initiative showcases the administration’s commitment to rehabilitating convicts and reintegrating them into society.
The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo (SAN), emphasized that this act reflects the governor’s dedication to mercy and rehabilitation. The pardons include the immediate release of 15 inmates, effective January 12, 2025, following recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
A statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary outlined the pardons, coinciding with Aiyedatiwa’s 60th birthday celebrations. Notably, several death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, while numerous inmates received significant reductions in their sentences.
Dr. Ajulo, also chair of the advisory council, shared that these decisions stemmed from thorough deliberations, taking into account the nature of the offenses, the age and health of the inmates, their behavior, and their time served in prison. He stated, “This compassionate gesture underscores Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to extending grace and mercy to these convicts.”
The act of mercy not only underscores ongoing justice sector reforms but also marks a poignant moment, as Governor Aiyedatiwa opted for a subdued acknowledgment of his birthday in memory of the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi, who recently passed away. This decision aligns with Section 212 (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which grants state governors the prerogative of mercy.
The Council’s recommendations have been informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and respected community leaders, ensuring that fairness and compassion remain at the forefront of this important decision-making process.
